With a preview copy of Indiaman in my backpack, I finally made it to the beaches of Pondicherry, India, 16 September 2023.

Rafe Hampson has edited numerous projects of mine, including the novels Joker and Indiaman. Birdcage, Wellington, 1 February 2023.

William S Burroughs' house in New Orleans, 18 August 2016. Jack Kerouac visited Burroughs here in January 1949. He wrote about the house in On the Road - "It ran clear around the house: by moonlight with the willows it looked like an old southern mansion that had seen better days."

I asked an AI image generator to come up with a cover for Indiaman with the prompt “Irish astronomer in India”…

I always thought these two unpublished manuscripts of mine had really cool cover designs. The Virgins of Mars (2013), a collection of short stories, was my first manuscript, and Writer vs the World (2017) is a diary of my travels in 2016 through Japan, the United States, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Canda.

I’ve always loved James K Baxter’s short poem about my home town.

I visited Tennesse William’s home in the French Quarter, New Orleans, 20 August 2016. “America has only three cities: New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans. Everywhere else is Cleveland” - Tennesse Williams.

Wellington, 2009.

The first draft of The Bloom was written in this notebook in April 2013.

Pysch World (2014) was my first novel. I wrote it in these notebooks while I was supposed to be working as a caretaker at the Victoria University of Wellington. Although it went unpublished, it did make the longlist for the 2020 Michael Gifkins Prize for an Unpublished Novel.
